For
years, architects and builders have specified
aluminum windows for their overall
strength, lasting value, and
ability to be configured into large
combinations for maximizing views.
Aluminum replacement windows were introduced
into the marketplace prior to vinyl replacement
windows. They were really the first material
that replacement windows were made of.
Though ideal for customized window
design, aluminum replacement
window frames allow for conductive heat
loss and are subject to long-term metal
oxidation. |

It
is more difficult to seal a dual-glazed
glass unit into an aluminum frame than
it would be to bond one into a vinyl frame.
However, color choices are available
in most aluminum frame products. Besides
the anodized natural satin colors,
baked-on white or anodized
bright and dark bronzed shades
can be ordered.
Many of the veteran manufacturers, like
CertainTeed, pioneered
in aluminum before vinyl became a viable
alternative. Some manufacturers like
Milgard, Superior
and BetterBuilt still
offer both a vinyl and aluminum line.
Aluminum replacement windows can still
be ordered with exterior options like
exterior flanges or grids, and with upgrades
like LoE glass. |
